amid this debt crisis going on, new jersey governor chris christie is at the white house asking for more aid in the aftermath of hurricane sandy. the president is going to ask congress for $50 billion. new jersey and new york will no doubt want a big slice of that but disaster relief is being held hostage by the fiscal cliff. how much pressure does this additional pressure put on republicans, seeing chris christie show up at the white house knowing that he needs money for his hard-hit state? >> it's a tremendous amount of pressure. part of what the strategy of think of what we're see hearing is the republicans are becoming increasingly isolated. you think about the discharge position. essentially even if they don't sign on to it, the point is they're going to own this mess. they're the ones who are seen to be, as the public suggests, not willing to make a deal. it is not unreasonable. we've all seen those horrifying images from the devastation of hurricane sandy. it's not unreasonable the governor of the state of new jersey would come and say i need help. americans are going to

cuomo a democrat and new jersey governor chris christie a republic originally told the white house they wanted $79 billion just for new york and new jersey. the white house instead asked congress for this $60.4 billion. the white house office of management and budget sent a letter to speaker of the house john boehner to say that this $60.4 billion would be, quote: funds necessary to finance a needed recovery effort and to help the region prepare for future challenges, including future storms, severe storms and coastal flooding as well as impact associated with a changing climate. governor cuomo and governor christie thanked president obama for all this money in a statement, this pledged money and the senators from their states chuck schumer, frank lautenberg, kristen gillibrand all democrats said this $60.4 billion is a good start but they acknowledged that congress has other things on its plate and this money is not all guaranteed. some members they think might push for some spending cuts to offset all this new spending. they said, quote: this is going to be a tough fight in the

is in especially bad shape. it's like a bruce springsteen song down in new jersey. last night, governor christie announced mandatory water restrictions. no one is allowed to water their lawns, which seeing as how the lawns just received 18 feet of water, seems like a reasonable request. you're allowed to gym and tan, but no laundry until further notice. the power is still out for 4.5 million people. it might not come back until next weekend. and they say 20% of the cell towers in new york have been wiped out. which means people have been resorting to using these. i believe they are called pay phones. they are -- look at how filthy that is. i'd rather write a letter, to be honest. previouses to hurricane sandy, the only people using those were pimps. now a local pay phone company said since the power went out, they've seen a 2,500% increase in pay phone use. that is -- do you have any idea how hard it is to play draw something on a pay phone? there's also a severe gasoline shortage in new york and new jersey. 75% of the gas stations in the state of new jersey are closed right now. people are wait

. the newark star ledger in new jersey reporting that governor chris christie is going to ask the federal government to reimburse the state for 100% of the cost of rebuilding from superstorm sandy. christie heads to washington on thursday to meet with federal officials. you know, parts of the new jersey coastline, complete devastated by this powerful storm. you know, governor christie estimates that sandy caused upwards of $20 billion of damages. >>> and the atlanta journal-constitution with more information about dozens of children and adults that were sickened by carbon monoxide poisoning at the local school there. at least 49 people were sent to the hospital yesterday. take a look at this. fire officials believe the heating system failed there. finch elementary had no carbon monoxide detectors, either. which, i guess, they're not required in georgia. and many parents complained they were left in the lurch because of poor communication. soledad o'brien will talk to a student, a parent and also a school official. so we'll get lots of sides there. >> also coming up, amazement and dismay.

to trick or treat tonight. in fact, because of hurricane sandy, new jersey governor chris christie actually cancelled halloween. he tweeted this today. he said, it's just not safe yet to be out trick or treating. so, halloween has officially been postponed until monday. does he really have the authority to -- [ laughter ] -- cancel halloween? this seems very suspicious to me. especially considering the fact that he just posted this photograph on instagram. for republican governors. we have chris christie in new jersey coming to mind. why is it that voters will go gop for the state house but not for the white house? >> well, think all politics are local, as you've heard said before. and i think there's interesting demographics based on the personality. it does not always follow that the trend of the state is what they'll pick for the executive branch. it depends on who's in opposition. you have a choice to be made between a and b. certainly chris christie i think presents a dynamic leader making reform and doing things that need to be done in new jersey. i mean they've had about 110 tax increases. he came in and said no more. that's a formula for failure. and he's in his own inimitable way said we're not going to do that anymore. i think people appreciate somebody who stands up and says it like it is and gets something done. and that's i think the example of new jersey. and in utah we are a very red state. it would be very difficult for a democrat to win here. we are very consecutive historically. and we've got good results. we've had a string of g
